For Owen’s 2 week birthday (March 6) we took him to the Princeton vs Harvard basketball game. Lucas’ parents were still in town and we thought it might be nice to get out of the house and to have some help along the way. We even headed downtown earlier in the day to pick up some Princeton onesies for Owen…he couldn’t go to the game without the proper attire. :)
He seemed to enjoy the sights and sounds of the game although he didn’t enjoy the band when he was trying to dose off…

And with Owen cheering them on Princeton won!

Shannon and I are at an impasse. We were talking this weekend and it turns out we have not been on the same page with baby names. I just assumed if it was a boy we would name him Rocky as a living tribute to my biggest inspiration in life. Shannon, however, had her heart set on Lucas Jr. I thought if we had a girl her name would be Gertrude (Gertie for short); but again Shannon thought Shannon Jr. What to do?
I have come up with what I think is a pretty interesting way forward. The baby is due to arrive (and the circular chart at the midwife’s office seems foolproof) on February 13th. The Olympics are set to start in the beautiful city of Vancouver on the 12th.

Here is my proposal: we name our child the name of the athlete who wins a gold medal closest to the time of the baby’s birth. I am even willing to pick an athlete of the same gender. This way our baby could share a name with someone famous like the unstoppable force in Norwegian biathlons Ole Einar Bjorndalen, or the sensation of the Korean short track Cho Hae-Ri, or the you-don’t-want-to-cross-this Slovenian cross-country legend Petra Majdic! This would create a post-uterine time stamp for our little one as well as provide a lasting legacy to the individual medalist and the glory of the games themselves.
Before we put this plan in motion, however, it is probably worth a little research. What do you think?
p.s. In a dramatic twist of irony, there is a potential I could still be called upon to represent my country in a number of events (Shannon is pretty well out due to the baby, but I guess there is still a chance). So, it could still theoretically happen that I will be the one standing on the gold medal podium nearest to the time of our baby’s birth—Lucas Jr. might make it after all!

Last Saturday we woke up to a nice fall day and headed out to enjoy some football. We went with a group of friends to the Princeton vs. Yale game (the 132nd annual meeting) and enjoyed the afternoon watching the Tigers kick butt.

As you may be able to tell from the pictures, we were actually sitting on the Yale side but there were more Princeton people around so we didn’t feel too out of place. Lucas and I both had on our Princeton sweatshirts so we fit right in with the fur coats and fancy clothes all around. :)
Overall we had a great time enjoying some football…Ivy League style.

A couple Saturday’s ago we spent the afternoon watching our alma mater, Missouri State, play basketball. Ok so we weren’t actually at the new John Q. Hammons Arena but it felt like we were thanks to ESPN2!

Lucas was just a little excited to see the Bears play since he hasn’t seen them live or on tv in over 4 years. True to Bear fashion they lost the game, but I don’t even think that mattered. We were just excited to sing the fight song and cheer along.

Last night we finally were able to enjoy some Princeton athletics as Princeton played Cornell in men’s basketball. Our friends Vivek and Jeanie had two tickets to the game and were unable to go so they gave them to us. We were pretty excited and after getting all decked out in our Princeton gear we headed to the game.

I don’t know what we were expecting but the entire evening felt more like a high school game. Don’t get me wrong, we enjoyed it but the arena was small (actually in a field house), the crowd wasn’t very big and the cheerleaders were pretty bad. Even with all of this, we still supported our Princeton Tigers.

The student cheering section…

At halftime we were ahead…

…and we enjoyed watching these little guys play their hearts out…

After halftime I decided to wander around to get some different shots…

Back to the game…

And after a good second half…the crowd went wild…

Princeton WON!

It was a great night of basketball and as I write this we are enjoying even more basketball as ESPN 2 is showing Missouri State! Go Bears!

A couple weekends ago my family all met up at Norfork Lake in Arkansas to spend the day together. My dad, mom, Lucas and I came down from West Plains and my Aunt Shirley, Uncle Paul, cousin Carrie and cousins Chris & Ali came over from Ozark to enjoy the day. We rented a pontoon boat and a tube to pull behind it. We spent the entire day on the lake and had a lot of fun together just eating and boating and swimming and tubing. I put in the most time on the tube because I LOVE IT!!! Unfortunately Lucas didn’t take any pictures of that but I snapped some shots of my other family members showing off their tubing skills.
Chris and Ali were quite good at tubing and put on a great performance…

After a lot of encouragement my Aunt Shirley got on with my cousin Carrie…

But the funniest part of the day happened when my dad and his brother, my Uncle Paul, decided to go tubing…

I really glad we got to enjoy a day on the lake especially since we were with family…

We couldn’t go to Duke without trying to snag a peek at the basketball court. We wandered around the building without much luck of getting in but the last door we tried was open. We acted like we were part of one of the gazillion basketball camps at Duke and snapped some shots along the way. Lucas’ dad really wanted us to get in there and take some pics so hopefully these will suffice…

Hope you enjoy these Larry…

I know this is a little late but I still wanted to share our Superbowl Sunday with you. We went into the game being a little disappointed that it wasn’t going to be Packers vs. Patriots but we still had our hopes up as we were rooting for the Patriots. After church Lucas headed out to play some football with Ryan. This seemed like a fitting thing to do on Superbowl Sunday. I came along and tried my hand at some sports photography…but I had to sneak in a few other shots too…Lucas and Ryan…

Ryan trying to get that sneaky quarterback…keep in mind Ryan plays rugby, not football so he didn’t enjoy the day as much as Lucas…

Our friend Josh joined in as well…nice ups…

Ryan diving to the ground in an all out move…

After an enjoyable afternoon at the park we headed home to watch the big game. We ended up watching it by ourselves which was probably best when I started crying because the Patiots lost. :( I got over it though by means of some comfort food…

Nothing like some chilli to make you feel better…

…and of course some “champagne”…of beers to wash down the misery… :)

Overall it was a good day, a good game and good food…
