Let me take you on a journey in time…

When we first took possession of our house our future living room looked liked this…

I know what you’re thinking…that’s some pretty nice wood paneling.  :)

Crazily enough we decided to gut the room.  So it went from looking like this…

…to this…

With all the paneling gone we were able to get a real sense of the space.  However one thing stood in our way…a giant beam…

With a little bit of luck and a few strong men, the beam was no more!

And then the ceiling was gone!  We ripped it all out so we could put new wiring and plumbing in places we couldn’t otherwise reach.  This was the view of our living room for over 2 months!

Finally the ceiling was redone and new drywall was put up.  Bye, bye nice, new wires and plumbing…

Hello sheet rock!

After hours of painting walls, trim, the ceiling, more trim, and even more touch-ups we were finally finished!

So for the big reveal we have the before…

And the after!

I can’t even believe it’s the same room!  Oh and that wire is not normally there…we were running our cable into our makeshift family room.  :)

We even had this soffit added so the plumbing pipes could run at the proper angle.  I actually love the look it create…

For your information (and for ours) here is everything that was done in the room (by us and hired out)…

Hired…plumbing work, electrical work, floors, drywall install, drywall finishing

Sweat Equity…demoing of paneling/built-ins/ceiling/beam, paint, paint, paint, ceiling fan install, paint

To finish out the room we have blinds coming any day now!  And we’ve also moved our furniture in to our new living room and are currently decorating it for Christmas!  A furniture update will come in the future but for now we bask in the glory of our new living room.

Welcome to the demolition derby!  For the past week Lucas has been hard at work demo-ing the heck out of our new house.  So for your viewing pleasure I give you before and afters from the demolition derby!

Let’s start upstairs with the hallway.  Unfortunately I forgot to take a before shot but just imagine paneled walls and storage above the door frames.  And in the hallway we’re actually leaving the somewhat new carpet because the stairs have a runner in the same color and we thought it would be weird to end it at the top of the stairs.  Someday we may change our minds but for now it stays.  In this picture I’m standing at the end of the hallway toward the front of the house.  Working your way around the hallway, on your left you have Owen’s room, the stairs, and the hallway bath.  At the far end is the future master bath.  And on the far right you have the master bedroom and then guest bedroom…

Master Bedroom – Before

Master Bedroom – After    No carpet!  We kind of like the color in here so all that’s left before moving in is the refinish the floors and put blinds up.

Guest Bedroom – Before

Guest Bedroom – After   Bye, bye paneling and built-ins!

Upstairs Hallway Bath – Before

Upstairs Hallway Bath – After

Ok now we’ll move downstairs and I’ll show you the projects from small to large.

Laundry Room – Before

Laundry Room – After    Turns out the wall on the right used to be the exterior of the house!  I think we’re actually going to keep the lap siding in this room to add some different texture.

Downstairs Bath – Before

Downstairs Bath – After   The vanity will eventually be replaced but for now we’re keeping it as a “functioning” bathroom.

Breezeway – Before

Breezeway – After   This weekend we plan to tile the floors!

And another view…The door farthest right goes to the student apartment and the second door on the right is the exterior door.

Living Room – Before

Living Room – After   I love this room now!  Notice the paneling, built-ins and ceiling are GONE!  And as of tonight Lucas informed me that the beam is gone!  Wow!  Can’t wait to see it in person!

This is actually an after picture of the entryway because it kind of shows you the floors in the middle of the refinishing process but it also highlights another thing.  Can you see it?

I’ll help you out.  In this picture you’re looking from the dining room to the entryway and you can see a wall beyond the light fixture.

Well now it’s gone!  You can still see where the wall used to be and there was even sheet rock covering all the stairs.  Now it’s fully exposed in it’s original glory!  I saw this last night for the first time and I just stood there saying, “Oh my gosh!” over and over!  I love the way this looks!

Well there you have it…a weeks worth of work.  Who knows what the next week will hold but 10 days from now we’ll be living here full time!

Last week we closed on our house in Fayette and took ownership!  However, we don’t close on our home in Boonville until the 26th so we are spending a 2 1/2 week time period trying to do some fairly major renovations.  Before we get to the projects I thought I’d give you a little tour around the house as it was on the day of closing.  I’ll also share some ideas we have for each room/area…here we go!

Welcome to our new house!

It has a wonderful screened in porch that needs a little TLC but nothing more.

This is the back of the house and the door we will enter through 99.9% of the time.  The backyard isn’t too big and is mainly to the right of this picture.  Also I’m standing at the end of the walkway so the garage would be to my left and then the two-story attachment you see to the left will be the future student area.

Since we’ll normally be entering through the back door I thought I’d do the tour from there.  Welcome to the breezeway!  You’d enter through the door on the left but I wanted to get a picture of the entire room.  It’s actually fairly big and we’re planning to lay new tile, rip out the fake brick paneling and put new sheet rock all over the walls and ceiling.  We see this as our breezeway/mud room/gardening room.  You may be able to see some stairs on the right and with 4 quick steps you enter the laundry room.

Well there’s the laundry room.  We plan to lay tile, rip out paneling, put new drywall in and level the slightly sloping floor.

As you walk up those four stairs you pass through the laundry room on your left and this tiny bathroom on the right.  Again we’ll pretty much gut everything in here leaving the toilet.  But everything else will go.  Who wants the awesome door handles?!?!  :)

So a few steps and your through the laundry room into the kitchen.  For now we will live with this kitchen but come Christmastime we’re planning a major renovation in this lovely room.  I’ll share more of those details later.  For now I’ll try to give you a few shots of the kitchen.

The door across the room is for a pantry…

This is taken from the same spot but looking to the right instead of the left and the door on the right goes to the future family room.

Looking back across the kitchen into the laundry room…

And from the pantry side towards the family room…

Ah the family room…clearly they loved dark wood paneling.  :)  This will all be gutted and new drywall on the walls and ceiling as well as refinished hardwood floors.

I love the nice big window and it looks right out to the backyard…

Standing at the big windows you look out into the actual entryway of the house.

And from the front door looking to the family room.

Pretty much everywhere you see hardwood floors just know we’ll have them refinished.

Coming from the family room, through the entryway, you have what we will use as the dining room/million other uses room.  :)

It’s pretty much good to go minus the floors being refinished.  And I love this little window nook…

Looking through the dining room into the entryway.  For now there is a wall in the entryway but soon it will be gone!

Now we venture upstairs…first we have Owen’s room.

It’s smaller than his current room but will still fit all his stuff.  He has two nice windows and for now we’re keeping the airplane wallpaper.  :)

This will be Stephanie’s room and a future guest bedroom.  We’ll remove the siding, built-ins and carpet.

Master bedroom…remove carpet.

Hallway bath…a pretty major gut job.  Pretty much remove everything besides the shower will go.

And our second floor kitchen!  Actually this will be the future master bath and we will tie this into the master bedroom to have a true master suite!

Whew!  There is a lot of work but we’re not even finished yet!  Ok now transport yourself back to the breezeway.  Are you there?  Ok I’ll refresh your memory.  To enter the house you’d up the stairs to the right but to enter the student apartment you go through the back door on the left.

Voila!  It’s pretty much ready for students!  :)  Just joking!  For now we’re focusing on the house part and then in the spring we’ll finish this all out.  Down here will be a mini-kitchen (using the appliances currently in the house), living room area, eating area, hang out area, etc.

Another view of the downstairs…

Upstairs we will divide this into two or maybe three bedrooms and a bathroom.

Another view…

Originally this addition was an indoor half basketball court and then the second floor was added and used for other stuff.  Even though it’s pretty rough right now it really sold us on the house when thinking of how we want to live in community with some students.  And since we only have Stephanie for this year it works well to have us all in the house while we work on the student apartment.

Well there you have it!  If this doesn’t convince you we’re crazy then I don’t know what would.  :)  Actually besides feeling stressed about getting stuff done before we move in, we feel a real peace about the whole situation.  We have seen God work through the entire process and we know He will continue to do so.  Just the other night I was showing a student around the house and she said how she was talking with some friends about what we’re doing.  She said it was all kind of crazy but then she corrected herself and said “It’s not crazy, it’s faithful.”  It was just the encouragement I needed as we press through some pretty crazy, I mean faithful, times around here.
